Truvada

Emtricitabine and tenofovir is used to reduce the chances of getting HIV through sexual intercourse or IV drug use. It is also used to treat HIV infection. When using for prevention, you must have a negative HIV test before taking this drug and at least every 3 months while you take it.

Emtricitiabine/Tenofovir (Brand name Truvada) is a medication that can be used in Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), Post-Exposure Prophylaxis, as well as treatment for HIV-positive individuals. PrEP stands for pre-exposure prophylaxis. PrEP is used as a term for all medications used to prevent HIV transmission. In short, emtricitabine/tenofovir is a part of the PrEP drug category.

At the same time every day, with or without food. It is important not to miss or skip a dose.

Take the missed dose as soon as you think about it unless you are close to your normal time of taking it, then continue taking it as usual. Do NOT double your dose or take extra doses.

In populations of individuals in which there is a high risk of HIV infection:
  1. Men who have sex with men.
  2. Adult heterosexually active men and women.
  3. Adult injection drug users.
  4. Heterosexually active women and men whose partners are known to have HIV infection to protect the uninfected partner.

  1. Inconsistent or no condom use.
  2. Exchange of sex for commodities.
  3. Illicit drug use or alcohol dependence.
  4. Incarceration.
  5. Partner(s) of unknown HIV-1 status
***It is important to note that this drug does not always prevent HIV. It needs to be used with other measures to help prevent HIV such as safer sex habits, consistent testing, and talking with HIV positive partners about their HIV treatment.***
