Isotretinoin is an oral medication that is used to treat severe acne. It works by affecting the sebaceous glands and requires a prescription as well as enrollment in a drug safety program (iPLEDGE).

Some of the most common side effects include:
  • Dry skin, eyes, nose, or lips
  • Sore or dry mouth or throat
  • Headaches
  • Back pain and aches and pains in muscles or joints

Accutane is a brand name of the drug Isotretinoin that is no longer available. Isotretinoin is the generic name and actual name of the chemical or drug contained in Accutane.

The most serious side effects of Isotretinoin are associated with exposure to the fetus during pregnancy and include birth defects, premature birth, miscarriage, or infant death. Other serious side effects not associated with pregnancy include depression, and suicidal thoughts or behaviors. Isotretinoin prescriptions require the enrollment of the patient in a Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) called iPLEDGE to prevent and/or limit these types of side effects, and to ensure the safe usage of Isotretinoin for all patients.

You should avoid taking Isotretinoin if you have a history of a mental health conidtion like depression, psychosis, aggresive behavior or thoughts about suicide. You should also avoid isotretinoin if you are trying to get pregnant, currently pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant, or have liver or kidney disease.

My scripts are LITERALLY half the cost as when I would get them filled at Schnucks CVS. Also, one of the medication’s I take has a supply issue.
