Though it may seem impossible, it’s true! We’re what’s known in the industry as a “cost plus” pharmacy — this means that our prices are not dictated by insurers or PBMs (Pharmacy Benefits Managers), who get rich by adding in unnecessary mark-ups. A cost-plus pharmacy is unlike a traditional pharmacy, where costs can be inflated by middlemen and insurers. We offer medication at “cost-plus” — our cost for the drug, plus a built-in expense to run our business. In the event that your insurance doesn’t cover the cost of one of your medications, your copayment is very high, or you don’t have insurance at all, you should check different sources to find the best price. While many online pharmacies sell these medications at discounted rates, they may still be using a multi-layer distribution system. This can inject additional cost layers, ultimately creating a higher cost for consumers.

Yes and no. The first thing to understand is that prescription discount cards do not constitute insurance. Coupon cards from drug manufacturers may interact with drug coverage, but those from independent benefit companies – like GoodRx and similar options – are often used in lieu of insurance.

Prescription drug cards can be used by anyone, but there are some serious limitations in their use. Anyone with or without insurance can qualify to use discount drug cards — but that doesn’t mean they’re the best option for getting cost-effective access to the prescription medications that you use on a regular basis. Additionally, if you have insurance and use a discount card, anything you pay will be out-of-pocket and will not count toward your deductible.

Patients show their pharmacist either a physical or digital card. Instead of using the patient’s insurance information, the pharmacy processes the prescription using information from the discount card. In this scenario, instead of paying their usual copay, the patient pays a reduced cash price. If the cash price is less than the copay of the patient, it might be a good deal. Unfortunately, this is rarely the situation and patients often find that they’re overpaying even with a prescription drug card.
